I was in Claire's (one of those costume jewelry stores) looking for something for my daughter for her birthday. I picked out a few things and had them in my hand as possibilities. I then decided to check out a few other places. I wasn't thinking and walked out of the store with the items still in my hand. A couple of girls working in the store stopped me outside the store and asked me where I was going with their merchandise. My heart felt like it had sunk into my chest as I realized what I had done. I told them it was an accident, but they didn't believe me. They asked me to come back inside the store to "clear things up". I went back inside the store, to "clear things up". One of the girls said she had to call her manager, which she did. After she got off the phone, I actually offered to pay for the merchandise (necklace and an ankle braclet). They escorted me to the back room and asked that I stay put until this was all "sorted out". I cooperated and sat down in a chair in the back room. I overeheard one of the gals saying, "[PERSON NAME] (manager?) said we need to keep him here until the police arrive". I said to myself "NUTS TO THIS!"and decided to get up and leave. They both grabbed each of my arms and asked me to pleases stay until this is all sorted out. I shoved them both aside and bolted out the door, of course leaving the unpaid merchandise behind. Now I feel all this guilt..
If this was in America, they had no legal right to detain you, much less put their hands on you. You could absolutely have sued them for illegal detainment + assault.
Hey at least you left the unpaid stuff plus it wasn’t intention in my opinion you were in the right
Ohh
You forgot it was in your hands? Okay.
